Recruitment for volunteer docent at the National Museum Singapore - 2019

Museum Volunteers (MVs) are recruiting English guides to guide on weekends and public holidays at the National Museum Singapore (NMS). If you have a thirst for continuous learning, enjoy meeting people and sharing your passion in the history, art and culture in Singapore, we want you!

If you are selected to be a guide at NMS, you will be required to commit to guiding 24 tours over 2 years. Tours include NMS History Gallery tours, Special exhibition tours, Community tours and any special request. An amount of $150 will be collected from trainees to defray the cost of the training.

Training is conducted by both Museum Volunteers and curators / experienced speakers and is scheduled from 7 Sept 2019 to 9 Nov 2019 for NMS. Attendance of 90% is expected for the training.

Frequently Asked Questions (for Training)

What is the timing for the training on Saturdays ?  

Training will run on Saturday afternoons on 07 Sept – 09 November 2019.  You will also need time in November 2019 to write the script for your (1)one-hour tour. Your first official tour will likely be in January/February 2020 There may be some days where you have to come earlier for research purpose in the gallery.

What is the duration time per tour?

We recommend that tours be kept to one hour. 

Do I have to attend all training sessions?

You have to attend at least 90% of the sessions. Our volunteers and staff of the museum have made time to organise the training and we are seeking committed volunteers. Please be sure you can commit to the dates of training before you send in your application.

What does the $150 cover?

This is to defray the cost of training . This is the training cost Eg books, materials, tokens for lecturers, tea breaks refreshments, activities related to training.

What do I do after training?

We ask that you commit to guide once a month at the NMS for 24 months. Our MVs take visitors who arrive at NMS and join the regularly scheduled tours. Each tour will last about an hour and they cover the highlights of the museum.

MVs will also be asked to help out to guide large groups or special requests, during public holidays and for special exhibitions. Some of these may be off-schedule tours, may be highlight tours or may take a certain theme or different format.
